I took these pictures on a 6-night backpacking trip with Ed and Alyson in the John Muir
Wilderness in September 2005.
We started at the Florence Lake Trailhead (7400ft) on the Western side of
the Sierras,
Here is a map with our route indicated. Note that part of the hike (from below Seven Gables Lakes to French Canyon) is cross-country. And it's steep - see the elevation profile. Also note that Ruskie Pass unexpectedly had a short class 3 stretch at the top on the Eastern side, and also (at least this year) a long steep snowfield that was easy enough to go down but which might be problematic coming up: definitely not an "easy class 2 gully" as described in (at least our edition of) "The High Sierra - Peaks, Passes, and Trails" You can see where this area is on a larger map.
I also made a
map with clickable arrows for the High Sierra portion of the hike,
with the arrows pointing in the direction of each photo.
